A rose show, roller derby, and crispy golden sourdough: 5-12 Nov
Published about 1 month ago • 11 min read
Hey, good morning!
We’re fully in the swing of November, saying 'buh-bye' to ghosts, pumpkins and those “minimalist skeleton” setups (cool? lazy? somehow both?!). Now we're in bracing-for-carols season, where red and green quietly begin ambushing us from allllll sides all while Mariah warms up in the distance.
This week’s mix is stacked with bakery runs and sourdough stops, a splash of circus, cozy cinema, blooming roses, a roller derby pride cup with speed and sass, and (of course) live music in every direction. Add in the first twilight markets of the season plus a juicy second-weekend of the month market lineup, and your diary might start to stretch a little.....
So why don't you make a plan or three and let your week find its groove? Suggest you keep your shoes by the door and your tote bag at the ready, let’s roll!

This is a neat brick cutie with “make-it-yours” energy, featuring 3 bed, 1 bath on a cute ~602 m² block, and in walking distance to the rec reserve, playground, rail trail and town eats. Inside you'll find sunny living, a practical kitchen/dining, and room to zhuzh with paint, plants and personality. And on the outside, an easy yard plus 4 off-street parks so mates can actually visit.
This one is hilltop hush, with massive skies. This 4-bed, 1-bath homestead sits on ~22 ha (about 54 acres) of rolling country, with ferny gullies and pasture that catch those Prom-side sunrises. It’s the kind of address where weekends stretch on and on, from coffee on the veranda, to pottering in the sheds, to watching clouds drag shadows across Corner Inlet. Practical wins—fantastic parking (8+), plus loads of space for stock or a sprawling veggie empire (or perhaps both!).
While on the road these last couple of weeks, we’ve been “just popping in for one” to some great little locals on the way through, and somehow walking out with a pie, a loaf, a few other 'necessities', and a grin you could see all the way from Toora. We firmly believe that some spots are too good to gate-keep, so consider this your starter "crumb-trail" to some of the tastiest pit stops in Gippsland. Let us know if you've got other favs!
Pandesal Bakery — Meeniyan (South Gippy) A proper artisan bakehouse right off the Great Southern Rail Trail: crackly loaves, handsome pies, and a steady cabinet of sweet things. Bicycle + dog-friendly and very “one for now, one for the road.” Hot tip: grab a seeded sourdough and something flaky for the passenger seat.
Connells Bakery — Wonthaggi (Bass Coast) A town stalwart that does the whole spread—classic pies, family bakes, fresh bread—and you can even order ahead online if you’re mid-mission. Hot tip: pair a still-warm pie with a takeaway loaf so future-you is sorted at dinner.
Yarragon Country Style Bakery — Yarragon (Baw Baw) Highway favourite with country-style breads, hot pies and old-school sweets—ideal “stretch the legs, feed the crew” pit-stop. Hot tip: grab a hot pie now and a loaf or pastries to bribe the car gremlins (I mean, passengers).
Orbost Bakery — Orbost (East Gippy) Long-running country bakery turning out the comfort hits—handy on a Princes Hwy push. Hot tip: benchmark with a plain mince pie, then circle back for something cheesier if you’re lingering.
Rosedale Bakery — Rosedale (Wellington) Aka the New Rosedale Bakery. Family-owned main-street pit-stop with the full spread of pies, slices and daily bakes. Hot tip: keep an eye out for their vanilla slice if you’re a custard tragic.
Paul the Pieman — Inverloch (Bass Coast) Old-school counter, big-hearted pies—and they like to riff on specials. Hot tip: watch for rotating flavours (we’ve seen Korean BBQ weekends and other fun one-offs) and add a sausage roll if you’re sharing.

🌕 Moon & Celestial Events
Full Moon (Supermoon) on 6 Nov at 12:20 am AEDT (100% illumination). In practice, that’s the night of Wed 5 → Thu 6 Nov, so expect brilliant moonlight most of the week. Last Quarter follows 12 Nov.
Taurid meteors (South & North): active now with broad peaks Nov 5 (South) and Nov 9–12 (North). Rates are low (~5/hr) but famous for occasional fireballs. Caveat: the Full Moon severely washes out all but the brightest streaks; best chances are near/after midnight and when the Moon is low.
Looking ahead — Leonids: building toward Nov 17–18 with dark pre-dawn thanks to a waning crescent. Keep watching for this next week.
What to point your binoculars at this week:
Saturn glows in the evening (Pisces); still a lovely target despite moonlight — rings show in small scopes.
Jupiter dominates late night → pre-dawn high in the east; bright enough to punch through glare.
Mercury + Mars are very low in bright evening twilight around Nov 12 and may be too difficult without a razor-clear western horizon.
Constellations: With the Full Moon flooding the sky, save the faint Milky Way details for later in the month; instead, enjoy Orion rising late evening and bright stars like Sirius after midnight. (Deep-sky views improve once we pass Last Quarter on the 12th.)
Tucked between forest and sea, Teulu House is a design-lover’s daydream in the quiet coastal pocket of Nungurner — a short skip from Metung. With its striking timber lines, sun-drenched open spaces, and floor-to-ceiling windows framing the gum canopy, it’s equal parts Scandi serenity and Gippsland soul. Pour a glass of local pinot, or wander down to the nearby jetty for a morning of calm by the water. Whether you’re holed up with a good book or chasing slow adventure around the Lakes, this spot nails the art of doing absolutely nothing — beautifully.
Picture eighteen acres of landscaped calm, complete with self-contained villas that lean sophisticated and serene. With big views, generous decks, and interiors that feel curated rather than “country clutter", this place is begging to be used as a launchpad for Toorongo Falls/Tarago forest wanders, after which you can then vanish back to your private perch.
Tucked deep in the ferny folds of Tarra Valley, The Barn is the kind of hideaway that makes you forget Wi-Fi even exists. This rebuilt stone retreat blends raw timber, rock, and soaring ceilings with just the right amount of cabin-core drama. You’ll wake to lyrebirds and mist curling through the trees, then spend your days exploring Tarra-Bulga National Park, chasing waterfalls, or just sinking into the couch by the crackling fire. Perfect for couples or solo wanderers, and just 20 minutes from Yarram but a world away from signal bars and city noise.

Goood morning ratbag! So, unless you've not been paying any attention, there's been a whole damn lot of aurora activity over the last week. And as we're still in the new moon period, this is still a good time for it if we have more solar flares (and things align again). SO here's my aurora 'recipe', before we resume our regular programming: Ingredients: Dark skies (moonless, or v. little moon, and not in city/towns) Clear skies (clouds, begone!) Space weather (we need strong solar activity...
Good morning, you legend, you! It’s still November (we already did the mild freak-out), and it’s free green-waste month where I am — which is excellent for fire-prep, less great for me pretending the garden doesn’t exist. I chucked on wireless headphones, cranked some tunes, and went to town! (The hedge lost). It’s looking better now, which is…fine. I might be a bit proud, even! Now for the fun bit! This week is stacked across the shires: a mad number of markets (including the Christmas and...
Good morning and happy Wednesday! And just like that (oh no, I said it!), we’re skidding fast toward Halloween and the end of the month. October’s been a ride, with wild winds, bucketloads of rain, the odd tease of warmth..... My Tarra plans last weekend got wind and rain-swept into next week; hope your weekend didn’t end with drowned-rat chic like mine did! We’re almost past the pumpkins-and-skeletons, and hurtling toward tinsel season! FYI, I strongly believe carols in October should be...
